Sunwave Deploys Its CrossFire Digital DAS Technology in First Malaysian METRO

Wireless Innovator Sunwave Enables Cellular Service for 7 Mobile Operators serving 400,000+ Daily MRT Passengers

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, July 17, 2017

Sunwave, a digital wireless technology innovator, deployed its CrossFire Digital Distributed Antenna System (DAS) as the wireless infrastructure in Malaysia’s first Mass Rapid Transit (MRT). Installed in the 7 underground stations and 19km of rail tunnel (9.5km each direction) of the Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) Line 1 in central Kuala Lumpur, the CrossFire DAS solves the requirement for expected coverage in this extremely complex METRO project, which includes high capacity usage, an inherently harsh subway environment, and 7 Mobile Network Operators (MNO) using a combination of GSM, WCDMA, FD-LTE and TD-LTE technologies.

“It’s highly unusual for a DAS project to require coverage and capacity for 7 operators,” stated Ben Patullo, Chief Technology Officer at Sunwave, which implemented a sophisticated Multiple In Multiple Out (MIMO) LTE technology configuration to deliver reliable and fast coverage to all MRT mobile users. “Using MIMO, the CrossFire DAS in the SBK rail line supports 7 operators, including Celcom, MAXIS, Digi and Umobile, and the technologies they and their customers use. We achieved this by integrating 5 x FDD and 2 x TDD operators all on a single system.”

“The MRT project team is excited to deliver such an advanced MIMO-compliant DAS with dual band TD-LTE integrated with multiband 2G, 3G and FD-LTE”, said Mohammad Shazleigh Bin Omar, Head of Telecommunications Systems at MRT Corporation. “The CrossFire technology from Sunwave offered unique features that no other vendor had commercially available.”

The SBK Line 1, which became fully operational with automated, driverless cars in July, expects 400,000+ daily passengers. “Sunwave is proud that its CrossFire technology enables superior cellular coverage for the passengers of Malaysia’s first METRO,” said Li Yuelun, President at Sunwave.

Commissioned as a turnkey project, Sunwave delivered the SBK Subway DAS network on time and on budget.
